DISPO

September 2021, I joined DISPO with the goal of creating a less-toxic, more-present photo sharing app. I was to design 3D camera UI and social assets— but within a year, my role had transformed into Dispo’s brand mad scientist, developing the narrative in-app. I pitched a backstory with lovable mascots as camera technicians, marooned in orbit, pining for human interaction (awww) and causing mayhem on your phone. My dream was to inject heart into the brand and to make it a place that brought a smile to people faces. Say cheese!

Future VISIONS

Inspired by the unfamiliar, sci-fi feel of analogue film development tools and drawing from our preexisting star/flash logo and starfield motifs, I imagined a world beyond where lil’ robos, fascinated with their observed human day-to-day, encourage users to capture moments both exciting and mundane to share and reminisce with friends. Below are some illustrations I designed for in-app onboarding to introduce users to these characters and story.

Illustrations

My goal with the illustrated moments in app was not only to provide a moment of respite from photos and user content but to win user hearts with these cuties and tell the story of their friendship and photo fascination. All illustrations had to work in both dark and light mode and meet engineer specs.

Achievement System

New friends means Friendship Bracelets! These new visuals would go on to inform adjacent projects including this fuUuUun tutorial moment! We gamified learning how to use the app by awarding users with charms each time they completed a tutorial task that you could show off on your profile page. Not a novel concept, sure, but each would have a smile-inducing animation sure to brighten up your day. I designed each of these 3D charms and bracelet concept.

Camera Design

I was the mind behind the design of most cameras you play with in-app. Each camera has a different filter, UI, package design and back story. The animations below would be used across socials to tease new filters. I also made a few non-cam related social posts to educate on new product features and to feature user content.
